WHAT IS CBT??

CBT WAS INTRODUCED IN DECEMBER 1990 BY THE GOVERMENT

TO HELP REDUCE THE ACCIDENT RATE OF NOVICE RIDERS.

The goal they set for themselves was to reduce motorcycle related accidents by 30% within ten years.
The actual figures are significantly higher than this over 77% within one year.

IT IS A COURSE TO GIVE YOU THE BASIC SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE .

CBT ALSO HELPS TO PROMOTE ROAD SAFETY.

ALSO IT IS A LEGAL REQUIREMENT IF YOU WISH TO RIDE A MOTORCYCLE OR SCOOTER.

If you obtained your car licence before 1 February 2001 you do not need to complete a CBT to ride a 50cc moped

but we would advise you to take some training.

CBT courses are run seven days a week, starting at 0900 MON TO SUN, and are usually completed in a single day.

It is not a test, but a assessment of competence and ability.

Your instructor will be in radio contact with you, and when he is satisfied you are safe and competent to ride unaccompanied.

You will then be awarded your Compulsory Basic Training certificate (dl196)

This certificate will now entitle you to ride on the road unacompanied on a learner legal machine.

Also this document in officially part of your driving licence.

NB :-ALL STUDENTS MUST HAVE BOTH PARTS OF THEIR LICENCE IN THEIR POSSESSION AND PRODUCE IT ON THE DAY TO TRAIN. THIS IS A LEGAL & INSURANCE REQUIREMENT AND THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS.

IF YOU HAVE THE OLD STYLE PAPER LICENCE, THEN YOU MUST ALSO PRODUCE PHOTO ID (PASSPORT) TO VALIDATE YOUR IDENTITY.

Upon completion of all elements of CBT, you will be allowed to ride any learner legal bike/scooter up to a maximum of 125cc (50cc if you are 16 years old) for two years, on L-plates and with learner restrictions, after which the certificate expires and a new cbt certificate is required.

If you obtained your cbt certificate at the age of 16 and your 17th birthday is within the 2 year cbt certificate period, then the cbt certificate still covers you for your 125cc learner legal

125cc machine if you upgrade from 50cc to 125cc. (gears are coverd even on a 50cc automatic cbt training day)

CBT candidates do not need to take a Motorcycle Theory Test unless they are preparing to do a Practical Test at a later date.

Our price includes the loan of all equipment, clothing and bike loan for the day.

Students own machines must be road-legal, and have all the relevant legal documentation and must be insured by the student to train under instruction.
It isn't common, but some students are unable to complete the off-road elements of the course successfully in a single day (8 hours) and therefore cannot do the road-ride element. In this case they will be asked to return for further tuition on another day, an extra charge may be required!

CBT.s are available 7 days a week starting at 0900, and finishing around 1700.

Would all students please make sure they have read the highway code, bring both parts of your photocard driving licence or photo id (passport) with the old paper style licence.
AND WEAR SUITABLE CLOTHING FOR THE OCCASION. IE: weather codtitions..

It is not the instructors job to teach you the highway code as you made a legal decleration when you signed for your driving licence that you have read and understand the highway code.

PLEASE MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO BECOME FAMILIAR WITH THE HIGHWAY CODE BEFORE ATTENDING ANY COURSE.

Safety helmets-motorcycle jackets-gloves and waterproofs are provided , but if you have your own then please bring them along if you wish to use them.

INFORMATION ABOUT DAS OUR COURSE.. moving onto larger machines...

The Direct Access Scheme (DAS) allows riders aged twenty-one or over to take a test on a large motorcycle

allowing them upon passing the test to ride any motorcycle without restrictions.

You must complete CBT (which you can do as part of an intensive course)

A motorcycle theory test and take a practical test on a motorcycle of at least 35 kW (46.6 b.h.p.).

We use 500cc bikes, which are more than ample for this task.

Our training courses are quite flexible in approach and we run training courses seven days a week.

You can run your course over weekends to fit it in around work.

Alternatively, book some time off and train with us during the week days & evenings "summer only on the evenings" or even during your holidays.

To discuss your specific requirements contact us or give us a call

TRAINING FOR FULL LICENCE HOLDERS for when you pass your test and wish to develope your riding skills.

The Enhanced Rider Scheme has been devised to be 'stepping stone' for riders wanting further training, but not necessarily Advanced training. The scheme is very much in its' infancy and developing with only 233 registered trainers (july 2008).

The ERS with initially be incorporated into the existing courses. The assessment for the ERS will consist be of one hour duration, and will include the rider debrief, administration and discussion on any future training issues. (You can book just the hour if you want)

The ERS consists of an eyesight and documentation check, so you need to bring your driving documents with you. After this, your riding will be assessed and a Rider's Development Record which consists of 26 competencies will be completed and if you are successful in achieving the required standard a Rider Appraisal report will be issued.

(This can be achieved in one session or over several sessions depending on your riding ability)

The Rider Appraisal form has 11 assessment categories and they are graded: Band A - Low risk to Band D - High risk.

Only when your trainer is satisfied that you have demonstrated that you are capable of consistently riding, independently to the performance required in all the competencies you will receive the Enhanced Rider Insurance Certificate. ( The document needed to enable you to get agreed discount from the insurance companies who are supporting the scheme).

In other words your riding being classed as LOW RISK.

HOWEVER there are some competencies which are theory based as well as practical based and it would be wise to study an up to date Highway Code, Riding the essential skills a dsa publiction, or roadcraft the police riders handbook.

An example of Those competencies are:

Machine Checks, Braking Techniques, Separation Distance and Use of Speed, Pedestrian Crossings, Darkness, Weather Conditions and Road Surface, Legal Responsibilities, Environmental Issues, Parking and Security, Passengers and Carrying Loads, Incident Management, Group Riding and Touring and finally Overcoming Limitations.

HOW TO BECOME A MOTORCYCLE INSTRUCTOR you need to be committed or need committing (both help) for this...

 Motorcycle Instructor Course

Are you passionate about motorcycles and like to meet people from all walks of life??

Thought about becoming a motorcycle instructor??

Then our instructor course may suit you...

You will need be over 21 and have held a full motorcycle licence for at least 3 years and be "A fit and proper person".

A clean driving licence is prefered, but at the "driving standards agency" discretion some points on your licence may be accepted

So, how do you become an instructor??!!!

Most people attend a local school and listen in and watch a live C.B.T being conducted by a certified instructor

Take notes and hope they have all the correct information.

They then attend the D.S.A. assessment at cardington in Bedfordshire and hope they get it right!!

Some do, but most dont, as they are not prepared with the correct and relevant information.

!!!THIS DOES NOTHING FOR YOUR CONFIDENCE!!!

Here at PhiL's schooL of motoring, we offer a structured course with all relevant and correct information to pass the 2 day CBT assessment, and then pass the half day DAS (big bike) Assessment.

We have two fully qualified instructors who have attended and passed both CBT and DAS assessments

We also have two instructors who are D.S.A post test registered (only 140 in the country)

!!!We are serious about our pre and post test training!!!!

The 2 day assessment at Cardington is not an easy task; don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

But attend with the correct tools to do the job as like anything else in life, it’s easy

Would you like to attend with the correct relevant up to date information and attitude???

Then give us a call or call in for a chat and a cup of tea and we can explain more.

As director of training, I (Phil) have trained instructors who have passed the assessment with flying colours

And I now have one instructor who is training for his cbt1 this year working with me observing my CBT training.

I offer a 1 to 1 training course with you over a six day period for the CBT course in preparation for you to attend the Cardington 2 day assessment, and you may even get a bit of homework to do.

You will be given all the necessary stationary materials for the course i.e. Highway Code, CBT book, Motorcycling Manual and Instructor Manual.

 The CBT1 course is a s follows

   1. Introduction to the CBT
   2. Practical on-site training.
 3. Practical on-site riding.
     4. Practical on-road training.
  5. Practical on-road riding

You will then conduct a simulated CBT with myself acting as a pupil

You will also watch a live CBT being conducted with a paying customer (if he/she has agreed)

As this is time consuming and has a cost to the school there will be a charge for this service but nothing like what other schools will quote you we only aim to cover what the cost is to us i.e. time & materials.
